Faridabad, the industrial city, is situated in the south-eastern part of Haryana. It is 30km distant from Delhi. The city was established by Emperor Jahangir’s treasurer Shaikh Farid, around 1607 AD. Now it is the commercial nucleus of the state. Besides being an industrial city, Faridabad is also a great tourist spot. The climate of the city is usually hot and dry, except during the monsoon. 1. The Badkhal Lake
The manmade lake in the Badkhal village is a point of attraction due to its great scenic beauty. Badkhal lake embraces the arms of Aravalli Hills. The name ‘Badkhal’ comes from the word ‘bedakhal’, which is a Persian word to mean ‘free from interference’. During the spring season, a great flower exhibition is organized here. There is also the Peacock Lake, a grand picnic spot to be explored.
2. Farid Khan’s Tomb
There is a parallel thought that Faridabad was established by and named after the Sufi saint Baba Farid. The saint’s tomb is believed to be a holy place. It is a local pilgrimage site.
Farid Khan’s tomb has two enormous marble doors; the door facing the east is called the ‘Noori Darwaza’ meaning the ‘Door of Light’; the north door is called the ‘Bahishti Darwaza’ meaning the ‘Door of Paradise’. There are two graves inside, one of Baba Farid and another of his elder son. Women are not allowed to enter the tomb.
3. Shirdi Sai Temple
The Shirdi Sai Baba temple on the Badkhal-Surajkund Road in Sector 16A of Faridabad is a place of attraction for the tourists. It is believed that the God is kind and bountiful and one can find peace in life with His blessings. The grand temple is made up of beautiful marble and covers an area of 3 acres. Inside there is the grand edifice of Shri Sai Baba and also the idols of Dhuni and Dwaraka Mai. The devotees can witness aartis, listen to holy recitations and get Prasad from the temple.
4. Surajkund Lake
The Surajkund lake was built by Surajpal Tomar, a Rajput King. The name of the lake represents the rising sun. Siddhakund is a fresh water pool within the area of Surajkund lake. It is believed that the water of Siddhakund has healing powers.
In the month of February, a handicrafts fair is organized at the spot and artisans from across the country come to participate in the fair. The fair includes different types of cultural programs to represent the essence of folk culture. Rural dishes are sold in the fair.
5. Raja Nahar Singh Palace
Raja Nahar Singh Palace was established around the 19th Century by the Royal Family of Jat Nahar Singh. Another name of the famous palace is the Ballabhgarh Fort Palace. Its distance from South Delhi is 15 kms. With enormous pavilions, huge arches, beautifully embellished rooms and magnificent courtyards, the palace represents a wonderful age of history and the taste of the royal family. It has become a heritage property now.
