Kalimpong is a beautiful hill station that is nestled in the hills under Darjeeling. This secluded town lies at a height of 1250 meters and paints a beautiful picture against the background of the majestic Kanchenjunga. “Kalimpong” which means the Land of the Kings in the Tibetan tongue was once a seat of the Bhutanese royalty and was introduced into the territory of Darjeeling during the British rule.

The climate at Kalimpong is generally mild though it experiences heavy monsoon showers. The temperature in the summer ranges from 17.2 degrees Celsius to 27 degrees Celsius and in the winter, it falls to a lowest of 7 degrees Celsius. The area experiences an average annual rainfall of 86.2 inches. The monsoon season brings with it a cover of fog over the area. Though the monsoons are heavy set, they bring out the natural beauty of this area and the forests generally come alive during this season.

The best time to visit Kalimpong is between the months of March and June and later in the year from September to December. During this time the climate is mild and conducive to travel. Travelling here during the peak of monsoon is unadvised as the area is prone to heavy to very heavy rainfall and landslides due to the same.

Kalimpong has a peculiar Nepalese cuisine, which includes a special cheese made of Yaks milk called Churpee and Thukpa, which is a warm flavorful noodle soup and is enjoyed in the cold weather.

Kalimpong is easily accessible by road, air and railway as it is well connected to Darjeeling as well as Siliguri. The closest airport is Bagdogra located around 80 kilometers away. The closest railway stations are located at Siliguri namely Siliguri Junction and New Jalpaiguri Railway stations which are approximately 65 kilometers away. The route from Darjeeling to Kalimpong is scenic and lush green, the route stretches to about 55 kilometers. Cars and taxis can be easily hired from Darjeeling, regular bus services are also available to Kalimpong. This area is connected to other areas via the National Highway 31 A.
